What is Branding?

I get asked this question A LOT which I am not surprised about as it sparks some major confusion. Throughout my design career I have found that when businesses dive deep into creating their brand, it saves a lot of time. So where does a business start? What is branding, why do you need it and who does it benefit?

Branding is just a logo, right? Actually no, branding is SO much more than a logo, branding is your business philosophy and your mission statement, your tone of voice, it is the font choice and colors that you use consistently through your social media marketing that is used on your website and other digital platforms, its the way your staff represents your business, your customer service, and its the way your customers feel about your products or services that make them keep coming back to buy.

To start, your branding should be focused on your ideal client. Figuring out who your target audience is is key to building your products and services. If you are a fitness business that is looking for a high-end clientele you would probably start exploring who is your ideal client.

Using a tool called a brand persona you can create avatars that could use your services or products starting with basic demographics such as age, sex, marital status, potential salary, other brands they gravitate towards, and so forth. Once you have a clear idea of who your ideal client is you can start to get a sense of your business’s brand. Your logo would need to reflect your ideal client’s persona choosing fonts, images, the mood, and the color scheme, and messaging is crucial.

Brand your business to earn trust from your ideal client or customer. Consistency is key to making a professional impact and for you to stand out from the competition. It benefits your client or customer to know that when they purchase from you or receive a service that the quality of the service is going to be the same as last week as it would be a year from now.

To get more clarity on branding and why it’s important take a look at some of the articles on The Branding Journal they are a great resource on this topic or contact us and we can help you on your branding journey.
